You described just what I think. When I read things like you wrote I am near to tears. I wanted to sell the Savage so many times (even the last 3 weeks), but I kept her. I love this bike. I must admit that I would never ride her in the factory-look (somewhat ugly). But that depends on taste anyway. When I first saw her in a magazine I knew it was her, I want to ride. Since than this is the third Savage I ride (due to accidents). When I call my dealer or take a look into his shop he always says:"Hello Savage-Karstaedt! Want to buy another one?". You are so right saying that other bikes have other problems and are missing character.
